"Could It Really Be This Quick, Easy And Stress-Free To Start A Business In The US Virgin Islands?"
The Answer Is YES! Here Are Some Of The Best Tips For Starting Your Business.
Dear Friend,
I am going to ask you some questions, and I would really like you to think about them before you answer:
- Do you have a business idea, but you don’t quite know how to get it off the ground?
- Are you unsure of where to start or who to ask for help?
- Have you started the process to get your business going and are finding it isn’t as straight-forward as it should be?
- Are you interested in getting an idea of the costs for starting a business in the US Virgin Islands?
If you answered YES to any of these questions, I have some great news for you. The process actually does have a rhyme and reason, and I have figured it out. If you follow this advice, you can sidestep the common pitfalls that EVERYONE gets trapped into and get your business going MUCH faster.
If you do something in the wrong order, or if you don’t have the right
certificate at the right time, your business opening can be delayed for weeks or months.
"Get Your Business Going Fast… Don’t Lose Money With Costly Licensing Delays"
The first time I started a business here it seemed like an eternity, but then I realized something amazing. I realized that it takes most people even LONGER to start their business. MONTHS longer, in some cases.
The next time I helped to start a company, I wrote everything down and figured out how to do it all in the quickest order. I learned from my mistakes the first time and I was able to get the new business going much more quickly.
Now, people come to me with questions and can tell them where to go next and what to expect when they get there. In my experience, here is some of the greatest advice I have found:
"Five Tips To Keep On-Track With Your Business Opening… Get Some Help From Someone Who Has Done It Already"
Your opening date is easy to push back over and over, but you can’t make any money from your new business before you go through the licensing process. Pushing back your opening can cost big money.
You need to know about as many “unforeseen” circumstances as possible. The best way to do that is to listen to people who have done what you want to do and who survived the process.
1. Sketch Out A Business Plan
My original business was going to be an Internet Service Provider for the islands. I noticed that no one was happy with their service, and networks just happen to be something I do very well. Everyone I talked to encouraged me -- or even begged me -- to jump in as quickly as possible. I stopped for a second and put together a business plan and, lo and behold, small Internet companies can't make money in the Virgin Islands. There were lots of expenses that I was glossing over, but when everything was on paper, I realized I would be crazy to start a business that just didn't have a chance. Even if your idea seems like it's the best one in the world, don't fall into the trap of assuming everything will be okay.
2. Apply For Your Telephone Line Early
Unlike in the States, phone lines in the Virgin Islands can potentially take months to be installed. If you need a land-based telephone line from Innovative, you should apply for it as soon as possible. The day you get the okay on your business name from the Lieutenant Governor’s Office is the day I suggest going to apply for the line at Innovative. Be sure to bring a $50 deposit for each line you apply for.
3. Set Aside A Little More Money Than You Think
Small things can add up quickly: You will need to pay little fees like license fees, deposits, and zoning checks, and some bigger ones like the opening deposit on your business bank account or professional fees for organizing your business. Be sure to tuck away enough cash so you don’t get hung up on a seemingly little detail because of its unexpected cost.
4. Know When To Call And When To Wait
Once you start sending in applications, you don’t want to be a pest and call three times a day for updates. As a rule of thumb, you should make a phone call when you have been waiting on paperwork for more than a week. Also, be sure to call the right agency. If you are waiting on your tax clearance letter from the Internal Revenue Bureau, you shouldn’t call the Department of Licensing and Consumer Affairs. More about that in a moment…
5. Pay Attention To Taxes From The Start
No one will tell you, but the clock starts ticking the day you get your business license. You need to be sure you are filing the taxes for your new company right away. Several of the taxes—most commonly, the Gross Receipts Tax—are due at the end of every single month if you take in more than a certain amount of money or have a certain type of business. Be sure to make those payments and keep copies of EVERYTHING so you don’t get burned.
It is easy to make the mistake of going straight to the Department of Licensing and Consumer Affairs and expecting your business license right away. After all, they are the ones who print it out and sign it. BUT, you will be disappointed if you go straight to them and want a license for your business that day.
The DLCA gives out the licenses, but they aren’t really part of the other government agencies. You need to get documents from the Internal Revenue Bureau, the DPNR, the police, and many others before you can go to the final step of the DLCA. Once everything is in order, your license from the Department of Licensing and Consumer Affairs will be approved within a couple of days.

I love having a business – it is challenging, I work for myself, and I do what I love. The licensing process that I went through is certainly a process, but lots of us have muddled through.
